12th – 13th October, 2021: The National Highland Research and Development Center, Jakar in collaboration with Livestock Research and Extension Division, Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Thimphu organized two days national highland development review and coordination workshop with effect from 12th October to 13th October 2021 in Haa Dzongkhag. The workshop is aimed to review the past interventions and pave for future to generate faster income and generate employment for the highlanders through prioritizing and proper planning. The opening of the workshop was graced by Hon’ble Dasho Dzongdag, Haa Dzongkhag administration with the launching of two highland products (Comb honey from Haa and Sakten and fermented cheese from Merak and Sakten.)
The coordination workshop was organized with the theme to “Promote, Preserve, and protect Yak and Highland communities” through the herders institution “Bhutan Yak Federation” pegged with the vision strategy 2040 for the National highland development Program. The workshop will foster better coordination between the highland Dzongkhags and NHRDC, Jakar whereby bringing the various stakeholders at the common understanding. The coordination workshop was attended by Chief, Specialist, Regional Directors, Dzongkhag Livestock Officers, Farm Managers, Livestock production Officers and Livestock production supervisors from the Department, Highland Dzongkhags and various central Program.
The coordination workshop offered a platform for discussion to varied ideas and innovations to counter the prevailing issues and challenges and the assimilate inputs for way forward short, medium and long term strategies development. The NHRDC, Jakar and other Central programs presented their achievements and way forward for enhancing the sustainable livelihoods of the highland communities considering the yak as an iconic land mark in the highlands.
