26th November 2020: The Highland Development Program, Department of Livestock in close collaboration with the Livestock Sector, Haa Dzongkhag Administration opened a Highlanders product market outlet in Haa town with an objective to market highland dairy products for income generation of the herders. The sales outlet was inaugurated by Dasho Dzongdag, Dzongkhag Administration of Haa and the occasion was attended by the Haa Yak Cooperative members, sector heads and staffs from Integrated Yak breeding farm at Haa. The sales outlet building is constructed with the fund support from GEF-LDC. The Haa Yak Valley Cooperative (Haa Lung Lanor Nyamlay Tshogdey) was formed in March 2019 by the Highland Development Program, Department of and Kanjangunga Landscape Development Initiatives of ICIMOD Project with initial 50 members. Three cooperative members of the Yak Cooperative will be operating the sales counter ensuing availability of pure Yak products at all times. During the inauguration, the Cooperative chairman expressed the requirement of continued support both from the Dzongkhag and Department to enhance the livelihood of the herders.
In continuation with the inaugural ceremony a short consultation meeting was held with the cooperative’s members, where the Dzongkhag Administration agreed to support the members to carry out the Yak based eco-tourism activities at Chelela and Nub Tshonapata. The representative from the Department of Livestock shared the continued support in yak genetic improvement and livelihood enhancement through the Highland Development Program. He also shared that the Department will soon come up with the Bhutan’s Yak Federation which will provide larger forum for the highlanders in deriving more benefits from the nation and also from the region.
