Improving the Yak Breeds

28th May 2020: To improve yak breed and revive declining yak herding practices, National Highland Research and Development Centre(NHRDC)  in coordination with Research and Extension Division (RED), Department of Livestock, handed over 3 no’s of yaks (2 breeding bull, 1 female) to Assistant Dzongkhag Livestock Officer (ADLO) of Gasa Dzongkhag to be distributed to highland community of Laya geog . Team compromising of Gasa Laya Geog Mangmi, Gasa Dzongkhag officiating Livestock Officer and Livestock Extension Supervisor of Laya Geog were escorted to Tang Nucleus yak farm to select the animals.

Soon the Center will supply three no’s of breeding bull to Chokortoed goeg of Bumthang Dzongkhag. The Centre has already identified around 60 yaks from Tang nucleus yak farm to be distributed to 10 highland districts in the upcoming financial year.
