A medium-scale feed mill had been established at Thangbi, Choekhor, Bumthang and was commissioned in March 2021. The 32 MT capacity feed plant will benefit all dairy farmers and dairy groups of Bumthang while it has the capacity to supply cattle feeds to other dzongkhags namely Mongar, Trongsa and Zhemgang.
The feed mill is expected to encourage domestic production of raw materials such as maize and soybean for feed production apart from creating employment for the youths. Nine (9) members or youths of the Chokhor Gonor Gongphel Chithuen Detshen (CCGCD) had been trained on feed production by the National Research and Development Centre for Animal Nutrition (NRDCAN), Bumthang, DoL. The feed plant was funded by GOI-SDP initiated by Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, Bumthang and installed by NRDCAN. The plant has the capacity to produce about 11,680 MT of cattle feeds annually. This will boost milk production while it will also play a crucial role in supplying animal feeds during emergencies such as this COVID Pandemic.
Bumthang produces about 2,620 MT of fresh milk annually and has about 1,884 heads of milking cattle population (Jersey and Brown Swiss). The feed plant was inaugurated by the Honorable Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests on March 11, 2021.
