Animal Feed Analytical capacity strengthened at National Research and Development Centre for Animal Nutrition (NRDCAN) Bumthang.

31st July- 6th August 2022

Learning from the recent feed issue and the subsequent impact on the poultry industry in the country, the Department of Livestock through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Technical Cooperation (TCP) Project completed the installation of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) machine at National Research and Development Centre for Animal Nutrition (NRDCAN), Bumthang in August 2022.

A week-long advance training on quantitative analysis of Aflatoxin and essential amino acids using HPLC machine was conducted at NRDCAN, Bumthang from 31st July to 6th August 2022 for the laboratory officials and the training was facilitated by two experts from Nepal through the FAO office and equipment supplier SHIMADZU. During the training, the participants learned sample preparation, processing techniques, testing, data interpretation, installation, operation and maintenance of HPLC.

With the increase in animal feed demand and the expected increase in private feed millers in the country, the role of Animal Nutrition Laboratory and the advanced testing facility is very crucial to cater to the ever-increasing demand for efficient laboratory services. HPLC will not only aid in giving timely analytical services but also help curtail the referral cost and time spent in referring the feed samples outside the country. With the completion of HPLC, NRDCAN will plan and implement periodic feed testing schedule for timely monitoring and quality control of animal feeds in the country.
