Advocacy on the application of Geographic information System in Highland Livestock Development

A week long advocacy-cum-training on Geographic information System (GIS) was carried out for the highland livestock officials from 3rd to 7th March 2020 at National Highland Research & Development Centre (NHRDC) Jakar, Bumthang. The event was aimed to build capacity of highland livestock officials on application of GIS tool in highland livestock development activities.

The event was attended by 38 highland officials from 10 dzongkhags, National Highland Research & Development Centre (NHRDC), National Research and Development Centre for Animal Nutrition (NRDCAN), National Horse Breeding Farm and Integrated Yak Breeding Centre, Haa. The participants were introduced to QGIS free software and its application in general context. Thereafter, the participants were taught to install QGIS software, create maps, print quality maps using composer, create shape files, joining data, editing attribute table, geo processing tool (clipping and buffering) and importing and exporting data from QGIS to google Earth and vis-a-vis. The participants were also taught to gather field information using mobile SW maps and downloading the data to QGIS.

Most of the participants reported that the event was conducted in right time, and the resource person has customized the content and practical sessions especially for the highland officials. As a follow up to the event the participants had agreed to authenticate the current yak population and herders data, map highland products (wool, fibre, and milk products), migratory routes and Tsamdro for their respective gewog.

The event was organized by the Research & Extension Division (RED) in collaboration with NHRDC, Jakar under the Department of Livestock, with Dr. Bir Doj Rai, Regional Director, Regional Livestock Development Centre and Mr. Pema Ugyen Sr. Livestock Production Officer from Punakha Dzongkhag as the resource person.
