Background

Office of National Horse Breeding Centre

Established in 1974 under the โ€œRural Development Projectโ€ to generate Brown Swiss cross breed bills and halflinger stallions. Until the beginning of 8th FYP there were 3 different sub programs as follows:

  • Brown Swiss farm(BSF)
  • National Horse Breeding Program(HBP)
  • Brown Swiss cattle breeding Program(BSCBP)

Later Brown Swiss Farm was separated as Production unit and in the year 2000 spiti breed was introduced (14 mares and 3 stallions) to replace the halflinger breed. Slowly in the year 2010, NHBF became purely an extension and production program responsible for horse developing in the country at Nasphyll in an area of 28.89 acres. After the cadastral survey, the farm have 37.982 acres of land in the Tharm No. 1381.

The horse breed which was introduced with the halflinger during the start of the office was replaced with the following breeds:

  • Yuta (Local Breeds)
  • Spiti breed
  • Thro breed
  • Hequ breed

Mandate

  • Procure and supply of stallions
  • Monitoring and evaluation of breeding inputs supplied to the Dzongkhag
  • Support Dzongkhag Livestock sector on
  • Technical backstopping on breeding and management programs
  • Farmers training and group formation
  • Organizing horse shows
  • Conduct survey/research related breeding programs
  • Conservation of Yuta

Objective:

  • Selection, procurement and distribution of breeding stallions
  • Provide technical support on horse breeding activities and management
  • Assist farmer group formation
  • Conduct survey/research activities on horse program of different breeds
  • Maintenance of herd book.
  • Planning and covering different breeds (Spiti, Yuta and Thorough) with Hequ stallions

Future Plans

  • Survey horse potential areas and select as breeding stocks
  • Conservation and development of local horses
  • Introduce breeding stocks in the farm and assess their performances
  • Strength and increase local horse breeders
  • Produce more Hequ cross breeds
  • Research genetic characterization of different breeds/types available in the country
  • Capacity development of farmers
  • Up gradation of skills and capacity of staffs in specific subjects
  • Monitoring and reporting to the head office
  • Encourage ecotourism
